In 1664 the French East India Company established itself at Chandenagore (Bengal),Mahe (Kerala) and Karaikal and Pondicherry on the eastern coast and Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It was a largely government controlled company which depended on the French government for finances. The French government dictated its policies.
Dupleix , the Governor-General at Pondicherry ,played a major role in expansion of French power in India.
