The Anglo-Maratha War (1775-1818)

The EEIC fought three wars with the Marathas to finally subjugate them. Unfortunately the Maratha sardars were not united and they took sides in the intense power struggle that was going on among the different factions around the Peshwa. Often some sided with the British to fight the others. The British used this to their advantage and interfered in their affairs. At rare occasions ,when the Marathas fought as a unit the British did face difficulties . But the British were finally able to strike back with great energy and vigour under Lord Hastings in 1818 and managed to dethrone the Peshwa and pension him off. His territories were annexed to the province of Bombay . The Maratha chiefs-Holkar,Sindhia ,Gaikwad and Bonsle-signed the subsidiary Treaty.
