The failure of British goverment to give Dommion status to India hardened the Congress attitude .
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was made the president of the Indian National Congress at its Lahore session held in December 1929. At this session ,the Congress passed a resolution declaring Poorna Swaraj (complete independence for india) as its objective. On 31 December 1929 , the newly-adopted tricolour national flag was hoisted. This flag was slightly different from our present national flag.
The Congress celebrated 26 January 1930 as 'Independence Day' or ' day of independence from British rule ' It was decided that every year, this day (26 January) will be celebrated as Independence Day .With a view to honour the importance attached to this day, later in 1950 ,the Indian leaders chose 26 January as our Republic Day.
