Tribal Revolts in the North-East (Assam)
In Assam, the land tax that the farmers had to pay the goverment was abnormally high. It is said that in the Kamrup and Darrang regions of Assam ,the British increased the tax by 50 to 70 percent. The British goverment confiscated the lands of those farmers who were unable to pay taxes . This led to series of protest by the farmers against the British administration in 1893-94. Under the guidance of local leaders , Large groups of farmers assembled in public places to fight against the British. But the English easily suppressed the rebels.
