Mir Qasim

Clive become the governor of Bengal in 1758 . Though he exercised effective contral over Mir Jafar ,the British were unhappy with him and replaced him with his son-in-law Mir Qasim .The new Nawab rewarded the EEIC with the zamindar of three more districts and presents worth 29 lakh of rupees .Soon Mir Qasim emerged as a threat to EEIC.He shifted his capital to Monghyr ,improved the finances and the state of the army .What irked the British most was when he tried to check the misuse of trade privilegs by the Company servants on their private trade .Mir Qasim took the bold step of abolishing taxes on internal trade for all.Now the Indian merchants were also able to enjoy the concession which only the British had enjoyed so far. The EEIC could not tolerate this equality between an Indian and a British merchant.
